Who We Are

About AWCF

Honouring a legacy of courage. Building a future of empowerment.

Our Story

The Anlo Women and Care Foundation (AWCF) is a Ghanaian-registered, non-profit, non-political, and non-religious organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable populations. Our primary focus lies within the Anlo Traditional Area of Ghana’s Volta Region, where deep cultural history meets modern-day challenges.

Founded in March 2025, AWCF was born not only out of a development vision—but from a legacy. The heroic story of the Anlo people’s escape from Notsie is incomplete without acknowledging the courage of Anlo women. Obeying a secret plan by Ewe elders, they poured used water on a spiritually fortified wall until it weakened, enabling their people to escape. Women carried children, food, and family heirlooms, fed the community, and even fought alongside warriors like Mama Yakagbe. Their innovation gave us Dzowoe, a lasting food source. Their efforts are immortalized during Hogbetsotso Za.

Today, their descendants face new forms of adversity: poverty, gender-based violence, unemployment, and limited access to healthcare or education. AWCF was established to honour this legacy—supporting women who still carry the burdens of their communities, and deserve new opportunities.
